Before you rush out and buy the first cute, wrinkly puppy you see, please be aware that the Shar-Pei is not for everyone,
as no breed of dog is best for all families.
The Shar-Pei is stubborn yet very intelligent. They are "reserved" towards
strangers but they are not aggressive.
Most Shar-Pei puppies, bred from healthy breeding stock and raised in good
social environments, develop basic "house manners" by the age of 8-10 weeks. They go through an adjustment period, as all
babies do when they are removed from the only family and surroundings they've ever known, but they adjust quite rapidly in
a loving, secure home. New owners should expect puppy chewing during the teething phase, periodic eye "tacking" as they grow
up and are stressed and, awful "coat dropping" when they reach 8-10 months of age.
The Shar-Pei HATES to have his
nails trimmed, and despises baths! He hates rain, but loves snow. He doesn't tolerate high temperatures combined with humidity.
His short muzzle and "pushed-in" face may cause his breathing to be compromised if precautions are not taken during summer
months.
When it comes to nutrition, we highly recommend the best you can afford, staying away from all pet foods found
in your local grocery stores. NEVER feed any Purina products because they contain high percentages of grains, artificial colors,
and preservatives. These food products could cause your Shar-Pei to have skin and ear problems, and may compromise their general
well-being. Hill's science diet provides much better care for you pet.
